Introduction to the cinematic Xenoverse

The Xenoverse or AVP franchise began with Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott, and the series continued with Aliens (1986) directed by James Cameron, before a new series began with Predator (1987) directed by John McTiernan, after which the cinematic universe began to take shape with Predator 2 (1990) directed by Stephen Hopkins, following its inclusion of an unambiguous connection to the previous films, and all of these films naturally inspired a great variety of expanded universe materials in other media.

The franchise would then see the release of Alien 3 (1992) and Alien: Resurrection (1997) before a solid prequel crossover film was produced, Alien vs. Predator (2004) directed by Paul Anderson, which was further established with an additional crossover film, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) directed by Brothers Strause, serving as a sequel to the previous and a prequel to the original series. The successes of these crossovers catapulted the popularity of the franchise to greater heights and inspiring additional expanded universe materials.

Then arrived another solo film with Predators (2010) directed by Nimród Antal, as well as a completely new film with Prometheus (2012) directed by Ridley Scott which started another series, the latter which was subsequently followed by Alien: Covenant (2017) directed by Ridley Scott. In the following year, The Predator (2018) directed by Shane Black was released which provided multiple connections to previous film series in both original and alternate cuts of the film.

At the start of the decade thereafter, we saw the release of further chapters in the saga, such as Prey (2022) directed by Dan Trachtenberg as well as Alien: Romulus (2024) directed by Fede Álvarez. Sequels to each of these two films are currently in development.
